Foods to avoid during pregnancy

The pregnancy period is often a very important time for both the mother and the baby alike. According to research, it is at this time that the mother should be cautious about what to eat because the choice may have positive or negative effects on both the mother and the child. Here are some of the foods you should avoid for a successful and healthy pregnancy experience.

Mild Cooked or Uncooked

During the pregnancy period, it’s not safe to eat uncooked foods or partially uncooked foods because these may pose danger to you and your unborn child by attracting infections.

For healthy growth, your baby needs a good supply of proteins and lean meat provides plenty of this. It is important to have your meat well-cooked to avoid the following infections;

      a)  Salmonella

According to the Mayo Clinic, Salmonella infection is a common bacterium that affects the intestinal tract. As a mother, you can be affected by eating contaminated food and water. It causes diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever. This could be transferred to the unborn baby and eating well-cooked food reduces the chances of any salmonella case for you and your baby.

      b) E. Coli

This is a type of bacteria that is found in bowels and the vagina. Some strains of E. Coli are considered to be not harmful, however, some can be very dangerous. Eating not well-cooked meat is one of the ways you can be affected by E. Coli. Cooking your meat well with the required temperatures breaks the bacteria.

     c) Toxoplasmosis

According to Mayo Clinic Toxoplasmosis is a disease that results from infection with the Toxoplasmosis gondii parasite, one of the world’s most common parasites. The disease is contracted by eating undercooked food or exposure to infected cat faces. A mother can also pass this to the unborn child. You can avoid this infection by eating well-cooked meat.

     d) Listeria

This is a bacterium that is mostly found in contaminated water and soil. However, it can also be found in undercooked food. According to the American Pregnancy Association report, pregnant women are 20 times more likely to become infected with listeria than non-pregnant women. The worst part is that contracting listeria during pregnancy may cause miscarriage, premature delivery as well as infection of the baby. To avoid any cases of listeria you should always eat well-cooked food.

Raw eggs

Pregnant moms risk contracting salmonella when they eat raw or partially cooked eggs. This poses danger to the unborn child because the child can be infected by the mother. A well-cooked egg should be considered as opposed to raw or partially cooked eggs.


Low-Calorie Foods

Foods that mostly have a high content of sugar and fats have small amounts of nutritional benefits and should be avoided or eaten in very small portions during pregnancies. These may include foods like cakes, biscuits, cookies, chips, and candy. This may bring weight gain and affect the healthy growth of the unborn child.
